Nashville hot chicken, simply known as hot chicken, is a type of chicken that’s marinated, floured, fried, and then brushed with a spicy paste.

The hot chicken is then served on white bread or hamburger buns, topped with coleslaw and a few slices of pickles.

Ingredients:

Chicken Sandwich:

  • 2 skin-on, bone-in chicken thighs
  • buttermilk
  • 3/4 cup self-rising flour
  • 2 tbsp. Nashville-style hot chicken spice
  • 4 tbsp. vegetable oil
  • 4 slider-sized buns
  • 8 slices sour pickle

Coleslaw:

  • 1 lb. green cabbage
  • 1 large carrot, peeled
  • 1/2 small white onion
  • 1 tbsp. distilled vinegar
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp. white sugar
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/4 tsp. ground black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp. celery seeds

Instructions:

  1. Start off with the coleslaw, by chopping up your green cabbage, a large carrot, and a small white onion. How small (or big) you cut these vegetables is all up to preference.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk together the distilled vinegar, mayonnaise, white sugar, salt, ground black pepper, and celery seeds. Add in the chopped cabbage, carrot, and onion, mix and chill for at least 1 hour in the refrigerator.
  3. Grab your chicken and place it skin-side down and cut lengthwise along the bone. Slice each de-boned thigh in half. You’ll end up with four pieces.
  4. Brine the chicken for an hour in buttermilk.
  5. Mix the hot chicken spice with the vegetable oil and set aside.
  6. Cover the chicken in the flour.
  7. Heat up an inch of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium/high heat then add the chicken thighs. Cook and flip every so often for about 10 minutes or until golden brown. Once they’re done, move them over to a plate with paper towels.
  8. Brush the chicken thighs with your spice mixture then add one piece of chicken, some coleslaw, and a couple of pickle slices between each slider bun. Add any other sauces you might want in the sandwich, such as hot sauce or mustard.
  9. Enjoy with some French fries!

While the dish is originally from Nashville, the recipe has made its way across the United States, in variations. If you want to serve up some authentic Tennessee goodness, try this simple Nashville hot chicken recipe!
