Creating A Safe & User-Friendly Kitchen
Alright, so it’s kind of important that you make sure safety comes first in the kitchen because who wants to get hurt, right? Cooking can be a lot of fun, but you have to make sure you aren’t going to end up in the emergency room getting stitches because you didn’t take the proper precautions. You’re going to be working around some sharp, slippery, hot stuff, and we’re only human (we make mistakes).
Follow these instructions and you may be able to avoid hurting yourself:
- Pay Attention! You do not want to slip on anything in the kitchen.
- Don’t keep your knives in the kitchen drawer! Children can reach knives when they aren’t being stored in a wooden knife block or somewhere else that children are unable to reach them.
- Loose clothes are nice, but they can actually catch on fire if you are not careful! We recommend you wear clothes that fit normally to avoid accidents.
- Dangling jewelry is a bad idea because it can wrap around pot handles, causing hot food or liquid to come tumbling down.
- Keep your knives sharp! Contrary to popular belief, a dull knife is more dangerous than a sharp knife because you have to use more force to cut. You want to be able to control the blade, and when straining to cut something, you are concentrating more on cutting the item than keeping the knife steady. With this in mind, the more force you have to apply, the more likely you are to slip and stab yourself!
- Cook with a clear mind! If your mind is not on cooking, your chance of making a mistake is significantly increased.
- Make sure to use pot holders! Your hands do not have nearly enough experience to touch hot pots and pans. You will burn yourself! Keep the pot holders on hand.
- Floor spills should be wiped up as soon as possible to avoid slips. Counter spills should be wiped up immediately as well in order to keep the counter sanitary.
- Temperature-sensitive foods must be treated as such. Do not leave raw fish, meat, or dairy out in the open for too long! These foods spoil fast and have the potential to get you sick.
- Wash your hands! Even if they are not dirty, they are dirty!
- Clean as you cook. Don’t leave the kitchen a mess.

Scrambled Eggs & Cheese
Prep Time: Around 5 min, Cook Time: Around 4 min, Servings: 4
Ingredients:
- 8 eggs
- ¼ cup of light cream
- Black pepper and salt to taste
- 2 tablespoons of butter
- 4 slices of cheese (your choice, we recommend American or Provolone)
Directions:
- Crack the eggs into a bowl. Using a fork, beat the eggs until the concoction is completely yellow.
- Pour the cream into the mix and add in the salt and pepper
- Heat up a 10-inch nonstick pan on medium heat. Toss the butter into the pan and allow the butter to coat the bottom of the pan. Pour the mixture into the pan.
- As the eggs heat up, stir them with a spatula. As they firm up to your desired consistency, add the slices of cheese in, spreading them out over the eggs. Make sure to conduct a taste test in order to see if you need more salt or pepper.
To decrease the fat, substitute the cream with water and avoid using the cheese! You may also use cooking spray instead of butter.
