It really doesn’t get any better than a homemade pizza.
Kneading the dough, cutting the fresh ingredients and enjoying that smell of a freshly baked pizza doesn’t compare to anything you might order for delivery or enjoy at a restaurant. One of my personal favorites is the pizza Margherita, which combines ripe tomatoes, fresh basil, garlic, mozzarella and parmesan. Sounds incredible right?
If you’re curious about making your own pizza Margherita from scratch, check out the tutorial below, from Instructables user skyisblu, to learn how to make Italy’s most traditional pizza dish.
Margherita Pizza Recipe
For this tutorial, you’ll need the following:
For the pizza dough:
– 1 1/2 c. hot water
– 1 1/2 tsp. dry active yeast
– 1 tbsp. olive oil
– 1 tbsp. salt
– 1 tbsp. sugar
– 3 c. all-purpose flour
– oil for greasing the bowl
For the Margherita topping:
– olive oil for brushing
– 4 cloves sliced garlic
– 2 large ripe tomatoes, or similar quantity of small ones
– 3/4 c. grated mozzarella
– 1/4 c. grated parmesan
– around 15 large fresh basil leaves
Step 1: Make the Dough
Start by sprinkling the yeast over the top of the hot (not boiling) water and let it soak in there for about 5 minutes. Add the olive oil, sugar and salt to the yeast in the water and stir. Now combine the yeast mixture to the flour and stir it well with a wooden spoon. Brush oil over the sides of the bowl and on the top and bottom of the dough, which will help when removing it later. Finally, cover the bowl with a towel and leave it in a warm location for an hour so that it can rise.
Step 2: Prepare the Toppings
Using a serrated knife, slice your tomatoes as thin as possible. If you’re using smaller tomatoes, simply cut them in half. Next, mix the mozzarella and parmesan cheese together and set them aside. Finally, slice the garlic cloves and wash the basil, the latter which will go on the pizza after it’s baked.
Step 3: Add Your Toppings and Bake The Pizza
Preheat the oven to 500 F. Apple flour to a section of your counter and roll out half the pizza dough, 3/4 inch thick. Brush oil on top of the dough, then add the garlic & tomato slices. Sprinkle your cheese mixture over the top of the tomatoes and you’re done. Put your pizza in the oven and bake it for 12-15 minutes, depending on how crispy you want your crust.
Step 4: Add Basil Leaves and You’re Set!
When the pizza is done, remove it from the oven and immediately place the fresh basil leaves on top.
