In-N-Out Burger | Homemade Recipes

November 17, 2022 By Nelson Aguilar 1 Comment

You don’t need to live in California to enjoy a juicy, mouth-watering and life-changing In-N-Out burger.

In-N-Out Burger | Homemade Recipes

Double-Double With Cheese, Animal Style

While In-N-Out is pretty cheap, not everyone has access to the pure American beef patties, fresh hand-leafed lettuce, juicy tomatoes, sliced onions, secret sauce and toasted buns that make up an In-N-Out burger. Sure, there are hundreds of In-N-Out locations, but the majority of them are in California, with only a handful in Nevada, Arizona, Utah and Texas. The rest of the United States (and the world) is sh*t out of luck if they want to fill their mouth with the deliciousness of a double-double with cheese, animal style…unless they make it at home.

Thanks to Reddit user Muskwa, you can learn how to make the caramelized onions, secret sauce and everything else you need to enjoy an In-N-Out burger.

Ingredients:

For Two Burgers:

  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • ketchup
  • mayonnaise
  • sweet relish
  • white vinegar
  • 4 burger patties
  • vegetable oil
  • salt and pepper
  • mustard
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 2 sets burger buns
  • 4 slices pickles
  • 2 slices tomatoes
  • iceberg lettuce

Step 1: Caramelize Onions

Start by finely chopping up one large white onion. Once chopped, add it to a frying pan with a little bit of oil over very low heat.

You’ll be cooking these onions for about an hour, adding a little bit of water every 5 to 10 minutes while they slowly simmer.

Once they’re finished (should have a nice dark brown color), set them aside.

Step 2: Make In-N-Out Spread

In-N-Out’s spread, which they call their “secret sauce”, is actually pretty simple to make. All you need is ketchup, mayonnaise, sweet relish and a little bit of white vinegar.

Step 3: Cooking The Burgers

Season each side of your four rather thin burger patties with salt and pepper.

Lightly brush your pan with vegetable oil and let it preheat for a bit until the oil starts to smoke. Add your patties and put a bit of mustard on one side of each patty.

Since the patties are pretty thin, cook them only for about 3 minutes on each side.

Add a large slice of cheddar on top of each patty and let it melt like in the image below.

Step 4: Setting the Burger Up

Brush a light amount of oil onto the buns and pan and let them toast for about 2 to 3 minutes or until they start browning a little bit.

Now grab the bottom patties and start by smothering a bit of the special sauce on them.

Next, add the pickles, one large slice of tomato, a bit of iceberg lettuce, one patty with cheese and the caramelized onions.

Since we’re making this a double-double, you’ll now want to add the other patty with cheese on the top of the onions.

Throw the other bun on top and your double-double, animal-style In-N-Out burger is now complete!
