Let us teach you how to make a blooming onion; an appetizer that'll make your stomach happy before you even start on the main course.

How To Make A Blooming Onion

Resembling a flower, blooming onions is a battered and deep-fried treat typically served at restaurants as an appetizer. While it is impressive-looking, it's not difficult to prepare at all. All you need is an onion, a sharp knife, a few ingredients and a pan filled with hot oil to prepare this dish in under 30 minutes.

Check out the recipe to learn how to make a blooming onion, from Tastemade, below.

Ingredients:

  • 1 c. milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1 c. all purpose flour
  • 1 tsp. paprika
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • 1 large onion
  • oil

Step 1: Prepare Batter

Start by mixing the cup of milk and single egg in one bowl, while mixing the flour, paprika, salt and pepper in another.

Step 2: Cut Onion

Chop off one end of the onion and then make 16 evenly spaced cuts all the way down the onion, but not through.

Throw it into a saucepan with boiling water for 2 minutes. After the 2 minutes, remove it from the saucepan and put it in a bowl with ice water in order to stop it from cooking.

Step 3: Coat Onion

Drench the onion in the milk/egg and then roll it around in the flour mixture. Repeat this process once more.

Step 4: Deep Fry It & Serve!

Place the onion in hot oil and let it fry until golden brown.

Let it dry on a paper towel and then serve with a side of honey mustard.
