Easily learn how to make fried plantains, the traditional Central American chips, from the comfort of your home.

How To Make Fried Plantains

Popular in Central America, the majority of Africa and countries across the world, fried plantains are typically served as an appetizer or side dish to a main course, such as meat and rice or tomato stew. Fried plantains can be made in many different ways: sweet, salty, fried, baked and topped with your choice of ingredients. Learn how to make fried plantains below.

What You Need:

  • 2 plantains
  • 4 tbsp. safflower oil
  • salt, to taste

Directions:

  1. Cut and peel. Cut off both ends of the plantains and then break open the skin. Peel it off and set to the side.
  2. Thinly slice. Slice the plantains as thin as possible into several dozen pieces.
  3. Soak in ice water. Throw all the slices of plantain into a bowl of salted ice water and let them soak for 30 minutes.
  4. Dry. After the 30 minutes are up, drain the bowl of ice water. Place 2 layers of papers towels on a baking sheet and drop the plantain slices (in a single layer) on it. Pat them dry.
  5. Fry plantains. Add enough oil to a frying pan to form a thin layer and then turn on the stove to medium heat. Once the oil starts bubbling, place in the first batch of plantains. Turn them over when they're golden brown on one side. You're done when they're golden all over.
  6. Season and serve. Add salt to taste and serve with sour cream or guacamole.
