Make Homemade Hummus The Quick And Easy Way

Hummus, an appetizer made from chickpeas or garbanzos, may have originated from the Middle East, but it's apparently winning appetites the world over. My home wasn't spared from this tasty and delectable appetizer recipe, so it's practically become a standard for parties and quick snacks. Although I prefer our staples homemade, I thought it was easier to just buy hummus from the store. Luckily, I came across this homemade hummus recipe that's as straightforward as it can get, and is closer to my home cooking style. Read on to find out for yourself and you'll never buy hummus again!

Let's Get Started!

What You Will Need:

  • 2 cans of organic garbanzo beans, half the liquid reserved
  • 2 large fresh lemons
  • 1/2 cup tahini
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • Kosher salt
  • Chopped fresh parsley (optional)
  • Food processor or blender
  • Silicone or wooden spatula
  • Glass Bowls
  • Strainer

How To Make Homemade Hummus

Step 1. Prepare Ingredients

To make this recipe faster and easier, just get yourself two cans of organic garbanzos or chickpeas instead of soaking fresh chickpeas overnight. Strain the chickpeas but reserve the liquid otherwise known as aquafaba. I prefer using aquafaba instead of water, for its flavors. Slice your lemons in half, peel the skins off of the garlic cloves, and set all the ingredients ready.

Step 2. Process Or Blend Ingredients

Toss the chickpeas into the blender or food processor. Add half a cup of tahini, which is simply ground or blended sesame seeds, to add a creamy and nutty flavor to hummus. Squeeze the juice out of the lemons, straining the seeds with your hands, into to the blender. Add in the two cloves of garlic, but you can always add more if you want a more garlicky flavor. Add a quarter of a cup of olive oil, a teaspoon of cumin, and a pinch or two of kosher salt. Lastly, add some aquafaba and continue adding as you blend all the ingredients to get the consistency that you want. Use a tamper or spatula to push the hummus into the blades.

Step 3. Finishing Touches

About 30 seconds later you will have a smooth and creamy hummus. You can store the hummus in an airtight container for up to one week in the fridge or up to a month in the freezer (if there's still some left). You can also add extra garlic, feta cheese, pine nuts, and herbs, or anything else you prefer your hummus served and enjoyed.

Serve Your Homemade Hummus!

Scoop a few spoonfuls of hummus into a dish and use the back of your spoon to create a swirl on top of the hummus. Drizzle with a little olive oil and sprinkle a little paprika or sesame seeds. Lastly, garnish with fresh herb and voila! Now, you don't only have a perfect dip, it's also delicious in sandwiches, wraps, and other recipes.
