There’s a new health fad going around and it’s human breast milk! Fitness experts, those suffering from chronic diseases and people who just love the taste of mothers milk claim that the milk offers some serious health benefits. We go over what these benefits are, why you shouldn’t believe the hype and how purchasing breast milk online is just plain dangerous and unsafe.
Mothers Milk – Its Benefits and Health Risks

We never thought we’d never see the day when an article on human breast milk would be necessary, but alas, it looks like that day has come.
The newest health fad to hit the interwebs is mothers milk and the claims are wild, scientifically unfounded and just plain nuts! But these claims have been so influential, that human breast milk has now turned into a huge online market with websites, forums and multiple mailing lists that have now reached into the thousands. So, what are these claims and why aren’t we buying it?

The “Benefits” of Human Breast Milk
As is the case when any healthy fad takes the country by storm, the claims made about the product are usually along the lines of “this product is a miracle,” “this will change your life,” or, as is the case with human breast milk, “this product will not only cure cancer, but will make you super buff while you’re curing cancer.”
The health claims made about this product have been:
- Human breast milk will cure cancer and ward off disease.
- Mothers milk will help with erectile dysfunction. (Finally! The cure has arrived!)
- Breast milk is protein-rich and, if you’re a body builder or trying to build mass, will help you bulk up.
It’s important to note that while human breast milk does contain many nutritional benefits for BABIES, the same does not apply for adults as our digestive tracks are different and not able to readily absorb the nutrients found in milk. For babies, human breast milk contains proteins, fats, carbs and vitamins. All things essential to healthy newborn development.
As for adults, it’s hard to find any nutritional benefits as the general consensus in the scientific community has, so far, been that there aren’t any. For those who have bought into the fad, another important fact to note is that human breast milk contains less protein than other milks, such as cow’s or even almond milk.
Okay, so if there aren’t any benefits, it should be relatively harmless, right? I mean, you’re just drinking someone else’s milk. Well, when it comes to buying anything online, the risk is not knowing the source, provider, or method in which something is produced. Let’s see what health risks purchasing human breast milk online poses:
The Risk of Buying Your Breast Milk Online
The major risks of purchasing mothers milk online is the sanitary quality of the milk and potential risk for transmission of diseases such as AIDS, hepatitis and syphilis. It’s difficult to trace the milk you have purchased to its original “supplier,” meaning that whatever medications, drugs, lifestyle habits, and diet the woman whose breast milk you have purchased engaged in, you will consume as well, as traces of those factors make it into milk.
The second major health risk is consuming any impurities such as food-borne illnesses, infectious bacteria and more. More often than not, the same online companies who are supplying the breast milk aren’t sanitizing or disinfecting it before shipping, meaning that what you’re getting is probably something you don’t want to be drinking in the first place.
Last, but not least, the Center for Biobehavioral Health at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus conducted a study and found that 11 of 102 samples of human breast milk were mixed with cow’s milk to increase its volume. So, why not cut the middle man and stick to just plain ol’ milk?
