What You Will Need:
- 2 big pieces of sweet potatoes (better if organic!)
- 1 teaspoon of chives
- 2 teaspoons of paprika
- 2 teaspoons of garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon of pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon of salt
- Flavorless oil or any cooking oil
Step 1: Prep Your Sweet Potatoes
Peel your sweet potatoes and microwave them for about sixty seconds. The microwaving process is optional, but it makes your sweet potatoes softer, thus, easier to slice.
Trust us, you are going to want to do this additional step to yield really good air fryer sweet potato chips.
When peeling, make sure that you are keeping your hands safe and not holding it close to the peeler. You don’t want to end up with a cut when you haven’t even started with your snack!
Step 2: Slice Them Up!
After you’ve microwaved your sweet potatoes, it is now time to slice up! Using a mandolin slicer, slice them into thin pieces. You can go ahead with manual slicing if you do not have a mandolin slicer.
When slicing, however, it is important to make them as uniform as possible. Having uneven thickness is not advisable because that will make each chip cook at a different time and they will not come out well.
Slice them about one-eight inches thick. You can opt to make them thicker or thinner, it all depends on your taste, as long as you make them uniform.
Note that slicing your air fryer sweet potato chips thinner will yield more crispy chips, and slicing them thicker will yield for a chewier batch.
Step 3: Time for a Bath!
Once you’re done and happy with your sweet potato slices, get a bowl and fill it halfway with cold water. Place all your sweet potato slices in that bowl and let it soak for about thirty minutes.
This is another optional step in this whole process but will result in a better batch of air fryer sweet potato chips.
In case you didn’t know and if you want to understand why this additional step is recommended, soaking the chips in water actually helps in removing the excess starch from your sweet potatoes. As you know, sweet potatoes contain a huge amount of starch that actually hinders the crisping process.
Removing the excess starch from your sweet potatoes will help to make them more crispy when you place them in the air fryer.

Step 4: Dry and Oil
After soaking them in water, you have to dry them completely. Drain the water from the bowl and place your sweet potato slices on a towel and press them out with another towel to drain any excess water.
Press them firmly to ensure that your potatoes are dry and don’t have any excess water. Ensuring dryness also helps with their crispiness in the air fryer.
When they’re all nice and dry, place them in a clean and dry bowl, and spritz with your oil. Don’t worry if you don’t have your oil in a spritzer, you can just pour some in your bowl.
Mix your sweet potato slices well to ensure that you are coating all of them nicely and evenly with your oil. We know that we’re avoiding deep frying with this air fryer method, but it is still important that each slice has a little bit of oil to help them crisp up.
If you compare the amount of oil you’re using here to the amount of oil you would be using if you’re deep-frying them, the difference would be stark and you will see that you are still doing the much healthier option!
When you have all your slices coated with oil, then you are for the next step!
Step 5: Now It’s Spice Time!
Gather all your spices because it’s time for them to shine for some really good air fryer sweet potato chips! Get your chives, paprika, garlic powder, pepper, and salt, and place them all in a small bowl.
Mix your spices together before sprinkling them over your oiled sweet potatoes. You can add them in one by one, but we found that mixing them all together first is better because they are distributed more evenly on your sweet potatoes.
Once you’ve sprinkled them over your sweet potatoes, you’re going to mix your sweet potato slices for an even distribution of the spices.
Step 6: Delicious Air Fryer Sweet Potato Chips, Here We Come!
Now it’s time for the last step in the process! Place your sweet potato chips in the basket of your air fryer then cook them for about seven or eight minutes on 400°F. After the timer, check out your first batch of potato chips and see if they’ve already cooked and crisped up.
If they need more cooking time, you may air fry them for an additional seven to eight minutes depending on your air fryer. Basically, check up on them to see if they’re cooked and crispy.
Once they’re crispy, then remove from the basket and cool them completely. Note that you’ll know when your air fryer sweet potato chips are ready when they’re crispy at the edges.
Don’t place your chips in an airtight container while they’re hot because that will cause them to get soggy. Air them out to retain their crispiness.
