A quick and simple homemade General Tso chicken recipe that you can prepare in under half an hour's time.

Homemade General Tso Chicken Recipe

Named after General Tso Tsung-tang, a Qing dynasty statesman, General Tso chicken is an extremely popular Chinese dish served at mostly Asian-themed American restaurants. Typically made with a unique sauce and breading, the chicken is placed over a dish of white rice and served with vegetables to enjoy. If you're interested in making the traditional dish, we've got a great homemade General Tso chicken recipe.

Ingredients:

For Chicken:

  • 1 lb. chicken breasts or thighs, cut into bite size pieces
  • 1/2 tsp. toasted sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp. soy sauce
  • 1 egg white
  • 3 tbsp. cornstarch

For Sauce:

  • 3/4 cup chicken stock or water
  • 1 tbsp. tomato paste
  • 3 tbsp. soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp. rice vinegar
  • 1/2 tbsp. chili/garlic paste
  • 1/2 tsp. toasted sesame oil
  • 3 tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1 1/2 tbsp. cornstarch
  • 1 1/2 tsp. minced garlic
  • 1 tsp. minced ginger
  • few tbsp. of chopped green onion
  • dried red chilies
  • 1 tsp. canola oil

For Rice:

  • 1 cup jasmine or basmati rice
  • 1 3/4 cups water
  • salt

Directions:

  1. In a medium bowl, combine the soy sauce, sesame oil, egg white and cornstarch. Mix everything until it has a creamy consistency.
  2. Now dump the chicken into the mixture, toss it around so that all the pieces are well coated and let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes.
  3. Put a little bit of canola oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Once it's hot, add garlic, ginger, green onions and red chiles and stir everything around for 30 seconds to a minute.
  4. After that, add the rest of the ingredients: water, sesame oil, soy sauce, tomato paste, rice wine vinegar, chili/garlic paste, and brown sugar. Mix it well and let it come to a boil. Once the sauce tastes to your liking, take a few tablespoons of the sauce out and combine it with 1 1/2 tablespoons of cornstarch. Whisk it until there are no clumps and then mix it back into the rest of the sauce. Let it boil for a few minutes until it's thick.
  5. Add oil to a pan over medium/high heat and cook the chicken for a couple of minutes on each side; you want it crisp and golden brown. The chicken will be done when it's firm. When finished, set it aside.
  6. Finally, put a pan over low heat and pour both the chicken and the sauce into it. Combine them and let it all simmer for a few minutes. While you're doing this, set up your white rice and chop up some green onions.
  7. Serve the chicken over rice and sprinkle a few chopped onions over it. You can even add some vegetables on the side. Your meal is now complete!
