How To Cook Flank Steak & Asparagus

Experimenting with flavors is always fun, especially when you end up with unique, yet delicious-tasting dishes. Flank steak is one of the most inexpensive and easiest cuts of meat to cook, so it's perfect for trying something new with. Thanks to a bit of lesser-known spices, bourbon and honey, you can prepare an amazing flank steak bursting with flavors you've never experienced before. Ingredients:

  • star anise
  • clove
  • cardamom
  • cinnamon
  • flank steak
  • asparagus
  • serrano peppers, diced
  • shallot
  • salt & pepper
  • olive oil
  • sesame oil
  • 2% milk
  • heavy whipping cream
  • bourbon
  • honey
  • garlic

Step 1: Prepare Spices

Start off by grabbing and crushing all of your spices, which you'll be using to rub on the flank steak as well as use to make the bourbon cream sauce. Using a grinder or a hammer, break up the star anise, clove, cardamom and cinnamon.

Step 2: Marinate Flank Steak

While you don't have to, it's preferable to marinate your flank steak overnight with a portion of the spices, some diced serrano peppers, shallot, salt, pepper, olive oil and sesame oil. You could also just rub it all on and let it sit for a few minutes before you grill it.

Step 3: Bourbon Cream Sauce

Add a bit of 2% milk, heavy whipping cream, and the rest of the spices into a pan over medium heat. Cook until it's reduced by half.

After the sauce is reduced, add 2 to 3 oz. of bourbon. Let it reduce slightly, then cover it and let it simmer while you finish the flank steak and asparagus.

Step 4: Grill Flank Steak

Grill the flank steak for 3 to 4 minutes per side. Use a brush to coat the meat with a mixture of bourbon and honey (3:1 ratio).

Step 5: Cool & Cut

After removing the flank steak from the grill, let it cool for several minutes. Grab a sharp knife and cut the steak into 1/4 inch slices, against the grain.

Step 6: Bake Asparagus

Season your asparagus with olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic and shallots and grill it for 5 minutes.

Step 7: Plate & Add Sauce

Put the grilled asparagus on a plate and place the slices of flank steak over it. Go back to your sauce, get a spoonful and drizzle it over the middle of the meat.

Enjoy!
