Fast Food Goes Green

Fast food chains across the country are making the switch to fresh, all natural ingredients.

The era of greasy fast food that could potentially kill you is coming to an end as a new culinary wave begins to swell with great intensity and speed. What is the newest trend in fast food? Healthy, organic and (keyword) fresh. The switch by major corporations like McDonald's and Chipotle reflects a growing trend in consumerism, as more people begin to look for healthy alternatives to the chemical-laden, GMO-filled products that are currently on the market.

With the impending arrival of Amy's Kitchen vegetarian drive-thrus, it's clear that healthy has become the new driving force for companies (and we couldn't be happier about it!) Let's take a look at the changes we can expect to see in the next 12 months.

The Rise Of Amy's Kitchen

Amy's Kitchen is a family-owned, private company that was founded in 1987 by Andy and Rachel Berliner and named after their daughter. While you may have seen their frozen meals (try their Roasted Vegetable Tamale!) in major chains like Target, Whole Foods, Food 4 Less, Vons and more, it was recently announced that Amy's is breaking into the drive-thru restaurant scene with the opening of their restaurant in Rohnert Park, CA.

How have they been prepping? Well, let's just say that it took them 18 months alone to find the farmers who will supply their restaurant with fresh grains, vegetables and fruit. And while people said that they would never be able to make hand-made pizza, burgers and burritos from scratch in less than 3 minutes, Amy's Kitchen proved them wrong with several timed, and successful, trials in their warehouse.

Another thing to look forward to at Amy's – aside from the made-to-order meals that use only fresh, organic ingredients, is the price range. Prices start at $3 and stop at $8 for a variety of pizzas, burritos, burgers, and salads.

The result?

Well, looks like you'll have to try and see for yourself!

Transitioning Fast Food Chains

Amy's isn't the only restaurant dedicated to changing the fast-food scene; restaurants like Chipotle and Panera are making the switch from GMO foods to all natural, fresh ingredients.

Chipotle has already eliminated all GMOs from their menu, while Panera begins their transition to do the same. Even chains like Taco Bell and Pizza Hut are making the commitment to eliminate artificial ingredients from their menu.

With all of these changes taking place, it's hard not to get excited (and maybe even a little hungry?)
