Food Hack: The Correct Way To Cut An Avocado

Avocados make the world go 'round.

At least that's would you think from the sheer amount of love you see directed at the wonderfully delicious fruit. Yes, avocado is a fruit and not a vegetable, if you didn't already know. If you didn't, don't worry—you're not the only one. I thought avocados were a vegetable for the longest.

So why exactly are avocados universally admired?

For one, they taste absolutely amazing—on their own or with a plethora of other dishes, such as salad, ceviche, soup, breakfast and pretty much anything else. Another great thing about avocados is that they're incredibly healthy. Not only can they help lower bad cholesterol, but they also decrease risk factors for heart disease and strokes and they can keep your blood pressure low.

Since avocados are so important, we should treat them as so. Usually, when we want a bit of avocado we bring out a knife and cut it in half, lengthwise of course. We throw the seed away, eat half of the avocado and save the other half for later. Well, you might be surprised to learn that cutting an avocado lengthwise is actually the wrong way to cut it.

Yeah, you've been cutting your avocados wrong your entire life. This is how to cut an avocado the right way.

Cut Your Avocado Crosswise

Instead of cutting your avocado along the length, cut it around the middle.

That way, less of the avocado's surface area is exposed to the air. Avocados are prone to something called enzymatic browning, which causes the flesh to brown when it comes into contact with oxygen. Cutting it across the middle will make it so that the pith to protect more of the flesh.

Now you'll have a fresh avocado to eat later when you dig in to the other half.
